Hey everyone and Happy Sunday!! Today’s a very special day for Heart’s Content and for two really awesome individuals…Alyssa and Brandon are getting married!! These two are so much fun to be around, and I could tell from our first meeting together that Alyssa and Brandon were going to be A LOT of fun to work with!! I mean really, they are HILARIOUS!! And they care for each other so much! You can just tell by their interactions just how much Brandon adores Alyssa, and how much he wants to make her happy! And I know Alyssa feels the same way! It’s an awesome feeling to see two best friends fall in love and begin this incredible life’s journey together! I’m so very excited for their wedding day today, and can’t wait to share every moment of their gorgeous and super fun wedding at The Vintager Inn in New Kent, Virginia, but until then, I’ve asked them some questions about their relationship and their wedding day so we all can get to know them a little better. While you’re at it, enjoy some of their engagement photos taken by Dara Houp!
Where did you guys meet? We met online on ChristianMingle.com. We actually met in person at Unos Chicago Grill and then went bowling for our first official date.
Brandon, complete this sentence: “When I first saw Alyssa I thought…” When I first saw Alyssa I thought that she was the best fish in the sea. She was very compassionate, patient, friendly and ambitious.
Same question for you Alyssa! I never realized I had a thing for red heads! No, seriously, I thought that he had a really nice smile and seemed to be just as nervous as I was.
Alyssa, when did you know he was the one? I’m the kind of person that really trusts my gut instinct on things so if I’m really looking back on our relationship in hindsight I think I knew on our third date. There was a moment where we were standing outside of a coffee shop in the rain together that I realized I didn’t want to leave, that I didn’t want to be away from this man. In that moment I knew that it was a relationship worth pursuing to the greatest extent.
Who said I love you first? What was the story behind it? (Alyssa) Brandon was the one who said I love you out loud first (and to this day he claims dibs on being the one to say he loves me more, it’s a running joke). I made the bold move to invite him up to New York to visit my family with me pretty early on in the relationship and it happened soon after we got back from that trip. I can’t tell you why, but for some reason I couldn’t get the words out right away back to him even though I definitely felt them. I think I proved it in time.
How did he propose? (Alyssa) I went out to Smithfield for the day and Brandon suggested we visit one of his friends down at Windsor Castle Park before we headed to dinner. So we got out of the car and started to walk down the trail towards the pier where his friend Cole was “fishing”. Suddenly he decided that instead of going down towards the water we should walk up the side of this hill where there are some old red barns. We get up the hill and there is his guitar set up with a chair and some daffodils on it. He asked me to sit down and then he played me the song “Love will be Enough for Us” by Dave Barnes (which is our first dance song) and who doesn’t love a man who can sing and play guitar am I right? When he was done playing he asked me to stand up and turn around and behind me were a bunch of our closest friends holding up signs that said “will you marry me?” When I turned back around Brandon was down on one knee with a beautiful ring. He said some really romantic things that I can’t for the life of me remember today and then he asked me to marry him. I believe my official response back to him that I managed to get out was “Yeah, yeah” but really shaky and quiet because I couldn’t get the words out.
Your wedding is TODAY… How do you feel? (Alyssa) Really really excited! I think with living on the west coast by myself for six months away from my fiancé, friends and family it makes me really happy to think about being around all of the people I love again. If there’s one part I’m looking most forward to it’s being able to share with all of our closest people all that I love about Brandon and how important our love is to me. That opportunity doesn’t come around that often and I’m thankful to have it now as we blend our two families.
Time for some details!! Tell me about the choices you made for your wedding. Our colors are navy, yellow and grey/silver. Despite just loving this color combination it turns out they are both our high school and undergrad schools’ colors as well. I think we really wanted to go for a theme that combined elegance with some rustic and country vibes, but that did it in a way that was simple. We wanted the wedding to reflect the things that are meaningful to us and I think the first thing that really does that is the venue we chose. The Vintager Inn is so beautiful in a raw and simple way that you really don’t have to add much to it to make it special. We decided to include framed prints of song lyrics from our wedding song because that will be a moment we’ll always remember and that song really speaks to our love for one another and how simple, yet meaningful love should be. The other cool thing we’re doing is leaving everyone blank cards at their table. Since we’ll likely be moving every few years with the Army our hope is that our guests will leave us notes of encouragement, love and date ideas that we can open throughout our journey. If they leave us date ideas we want to take pictures to send back to them!
Describe your wedding in 3 words… Simple, rustic, elegant.
What did you love most about planning your wedding? (Brandon) Being able to make decisions as a couple and figuring out what we like and don’t like. (Alyssa) Brandon and I came up with a system that if he really didn’t like an idea I put out there he could say “ewww gross, but I love you”. I really wanted the wedding to be about us and not about the bride, which is hard when everyone’s telling you it should be.
The HC Team loves to have fun with our couples and give or brides and grooms “code names” on the wedding day. What would be your ideal wedding day code names? (Brandon) I would be “The Arrow” (Alyssa) I’d be “Merlin.” Both are characters from one of our favorite TV shows, Arrow.
What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day? (Alyssa) I’m most looking forward to seeing Brandon’s face for the first time on Sunday at the end of the aisle because it means our moment is finally here.
Where are you going on your honeymoon? Next weekend we’re going to the Willows Lodge outside of Seattle for the weekend. We’re planning an actual honeymoon next Fall once I’m done with internship. We’re thinking about going to Hawaii since it’s just a plane ride away from Washington.
What are you most looking forward to in marriage? (Alyssa) Being able to build a life and a home together and make decisions for our family as one. More than anything I’m looking forward to just being with Brandon, having fun and sharing life together.
What advice would you give to newly engaged couples? Have fun and make wedding decisions together, it’s way more fun that way! Oh and don’t treat every decision like is life or death because in the end all that matters is that you’re marrying your best friend.
Alyssa and Brandon,
I’m so excited to get this party started, share lots of laughs and all the happy tears with you! I’m so grateful that we met and so humbled that you chose me to help make your wedding day as special as the two of you are! See you guys in a few hours! I can’t wait!!
