Happy Wednesday, friends!! It’s time for another brilliant set of wedding tips from another extraordinary wedding professional that I have had the honor knowing and working with, Lauren Simmons!! Lauren is a goal setting NINJA, and she is so great at giving amazing tips for setting priorities and goals in marriages, life, career, and everything in between! She is also an incredible photographer, and all around kind-hearted person. Seriously, she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet! Today she is sharing her best tips for soon-to-be-married couples to make the best set of goals to match their wedding needs! Enjoy!!
Wedding planning CAN be fun, but you have to make it that way!! My first suggestion is to always hire a planner ;). Outside of that, there are always personal goals you can set for yourself for your wedding! One piece of advice I have for you is to have time outside of talking about your wedding. Set aside at least one night a week just to spend time with each other – go on a date!! And don’t talk about your wedding. Talk about goals for your life!
As for your wedding …. here it goes!
Tips for Setting Goals For Your Wedding
If you go to my blog and read this post (http://www.lauren-simmons.
Make a Positive Environment
Setting goals IS intimidating at this point. You guys are engaged!! You haven’t necessarily had as many conversations about setting goals as married people. Set aside a specific time to JUST set goals. This time isn’t for anything else. Don’t make it about wedding planning tasks or buying a house too. This is JUST for dreaming and planning out those dreams. Make sure you address that this is not a time for putting each other down for silly ideas, this is a time for dreaming no matter how crazy it seems!!
You and your fiancé have hopefully had conversations where you are choosing to have an open mind. This is one of those times!! Don’t worry, when you’re married you’ll get a lot more practice at this! You’ll be tempted to say things like “we don’t have $50,000 extra in our budget to do something like that!!” But this is not the time to be realistic, this is a time to dream!
Write Them Down!
In order to set goals, plan for them, and remember them, you have to write them down somewhere. You can share a note in the Notes App on your phone! When you write them down, it reminds you of the direction you’re going for your wedding.
Be prepared to Have Hard Conversations
Check out my blog post about this (link above)! For weddings, this is different. There probably won’t be too many “hard” conversations about your goals for your wedding, but you might not agree on somethings. I recommend both of your sharing your goals and dreams for your wedding until they’re exhausted and THEN sitting down to actually think through how you’re going to make them happen. This will be hard! You might have to say “we might not be able to make this happen,” but what I’d rather you say is, “how can we make this happen in our budget? We might have to change the idea a little bit, but we’re going to have some form of this goal happening that day!”
Examples of Goals for Your Wedding
I love that these are relatively short-term goals, you’re going to see them through fairly quickly!!
Here’s a list of goals/dreams that Josh and I had for our wedding. Best part? Some of them cost NO MONEY!! They just took some serious planning!
Fiancés, this won’t be easy, but I think it’s totally necessary! Not only will this set you up well for your wedding, it will set you up to communicate well during your marriage!
