I am so proud…no…I am prouder than proud!!! On May 7th, my sister, Hannah, walked across the stage to become DOCTOR HANNAH JONES!!! How exciting!!!
Hannah entered into the 5-year PsyD program at Regent University in 2011, ready to start a brand new adventure, and ready to step forward in her life’s purpose. And I couldn’t have been more excited…at least until now! Hannah has always been brilliant…like incredibly smart. I remember when we were in high school, and she took AP Psychology (which she aced with a perfect score!)–a fire lit up in her after taking that course, which I believe was the fuel for her to study it again at Howard University, and then continue on to pursue graduate degrees. And now, here we are!!
On Friday, we went to a beautiful commissioning ceremony where all the Psychology and Counseling school graduates were hooded, anointed, and prayed over. Then Saturday was the main event, where we got to see Hannah walk across the stage…and through the rain. Haha! Just before the commencement processional began, it started pouring down raining. All the graduates and their loved ones were rained on, and many started leaving to the rain shelters. But we stayed put! We had the best seats in the house, as all the graduates processed by us, we sang “Pomp and Circumstance” at the top of our lungs, and got even louder once Hannah went by! It was so exciting to see Hannah walk across that stage and into her calling.
Our little guy loves Titi Hannah!!
After graduation, I asked her how she would summarize her experience as a doctoral student, how she felt about graduating, and what’s next on her journey, and this is how she so brilliantly replied:
I really started to understand my calling in the world of psychology and learned to be who I was professionally and personally–that my identity is something I define for myself and that I can be that, even if I stand alone. I learned that I really have a passion and a heart for social justice and for advocating for equity for my clients and communities I serve.
Amazing, right?? So what’s next? She’s back in Oakland, CA finishing her internship at West Coast Children’s Clinic, then she’ll get to come home for a couple months before going back to Oakland for her Post Doc at the same site! Hannah’s making such a big difference in the lives of so many youth in Oakland, and I couldn’t be more proud of her for letting her light shine and walking in her calling!!
It wouldn’t be a Jones Sister gathering without dancing!!
James is so proud!!!
Our whole family is so proud of her, and I know our mom is smiling down from Heaven with the biggest smile! I am so very proud of the woman she’s become, and how God is going to use her to be a blessing to so many people who need her help!!
